FEARS OF FASCISM AS ISRAELI EXTREMISTS PREPARE TO TAKE ELECTIONS

JERUSALEM – Israel’s upcoming general elections early next year could see some of the country’s most BENJAMIN NETANYAHUextreme right-wing elements, accused of being racist by some, winning the elections.

Right-wing poster boy Benjamin Netanyahu, a former Israeli prime minister, and chairman of the right-wing party Likud, is battling even more extreme elements in his own party in a bid to become Israel’s next prime minister.

He will face off against Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, the chairman of the more centrist and ruling party Kadima, to lead the country. Current opinion polls indicate Netanyahu to be in the lead.

Likud held its primaries on Monday to prepare a list of candidates for the Knesset (Israeli parliament) with those from the far right making a strong showing.

Netanyahu had hoped that the more moderate elements he had brought into the party would help the party maintain a more moderate image. But during the primary hardliners captured and dominated the first 20 spots.

Chief extremist to make huge political gains and threaten Netanyahu’s chairmanship was Moshe Feiglin, a fan of the early fascist and Zionist pioneer, Zeev Jabotinsky, who hailed from Russia.

His strong showing prompted incumbent premier Ehud Olmert to comment that Likud had turned from a party of peace to an extreme right faction.

“The Likud, which was once a party of peace, has turned into an extreme rightist party, which will lead the state of Israel into a corner of isolation and which will bring us back to grave times,” said DOLFIE HITLER ... RAGING MADOlmert.

Livni also had little sympathy for Netanyahu’s plight. “The list is not my problem, it’s Bibi’s [a nickname for Netanyahu] problem. It’s a weight around his legs, not mine.”

Even Kadima member Tzahi Hanegbi, a former right-wing extremist himself and son of Geula Cohen, one of Likud’s founders and a strong supporter of Israel’s controversial settler movement, lamented the party’s swing to the right.

Hanegbi was against the evacuation of Gaza’s settlements and charged years ago with attacking Israeli-Arab students with chains during an altercation at Jerusalem’s Hebrew University.

“Netanyahu’s dream team became his nightmare. The stars are out and the rebels are in. The Likud rebels are rebels no longer, they are the rulers,” said Hanegbi.

The controversy surrounding Feiglin, who won 20th position on the Kadima list and stands a good chance of being elected to the Knesset, is based on some of his more outrageous statements and his extreme ideology.

During an interview in 1995 with the Israeli daily Haaretz Feiglin shared his thoughts on Hitler and his policies.

“Hitler was an unparalleled military genius. Nazism promoted Germany from a low to a fantastic physical and ideological status.

“The ragged, trashy youth body turned into a neat and orderly part of society and Germany received an exemplary regime, a proper justice system and public order.

“Hitler savored good music. He would paint. This was no bunch of thugs. They merely used thugs and homosexuals,” said Feiglin.

Feiglin also gave his candid opinion on the Palestinians, whom he said didn’t really exist.

“There is no Palestinian nation. There is only an Arab-speaking public which has suddenly identified itself as a people, a negative of the Zionist movement, parasites.

“The fact that they hadn’t done so earlier only serves to prove how inferior they are. The Africans have no nations either. Only Zulus, Tutsis,” he MOSHE FEIGLINadded.

Acerbic analyst, political commentator and former chairman of the left-wing peace party Meretz, Yossi Sarid, lashed out at Feiglin in a stinging commentary in Haaretz.

“The time has come to break free from the shackles of politically correct speech and call these people – Feiglin and his cronies – by their explicit name.

“They are not ‘radicals’ but fascists by any acceptable definition. And had they not been born – through no fault of their own – to Jewish mothers, they would have been damn anti-Semites to boot,” asserted Sarid.

Should Feiglin eventually take over Likud and should Likud win the forthcoming general elections it would be stating the obvious to say that peace talks with the Palestinians and the domino effect of stability in the region, don’t stand a fighting chance.

And while Feiglin might be Netanyahu’s political nemesis and nightmare, he could well turn out to be the entire region’s nightmare to boot.

DE MENEZES JURY RECORD OPEN VERDICT AND REJECTS POLICE VERSION OF SHOOTING (UK)

JUSTICE FOR JEAN

The inquest jury examining the death of Jean-Charles de Menezes has returned an open verdict – refusing to accept the idea that he was lawfully killed in a fast-moving anti-terrorist operation.

The jurors also answered a series of questions about the circumstances of Mr de Menezes’s death on board a Tube train at Stockwell, South London, in a way which rejected much of the account of the shooting given by police firearms officers.

Asked if they believed that the policemen had shouted a warning of armed police, the jury answered no. They also answered no when asked if Mr de Menezes had moved towards the officers before he was shot.

The jury had been banned by Sir Michael Wright, QC, the coroner, from considering a verdict of unlawful killing. His ruling led the de Menezes family to withdraw from the proceedings and brand the inquest “a complete whitewash”.

But the outcome of the inquest is a damaging result for the Metropolitan Police and could lead to a legal challenge to the verdict in the High Court.

The coroner said he would be preparing a report on what practices of the Metropolitan Police required changing. It will be sent to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, the police authority and the Home Secretary and should be made public.

Sir Michael expressed his “sincere condolences” to the de Menezes family.

He said: “In any view this was a tragic and terrible event, the killing of an entirely innocent young man.”

The majority verdict of 8-2 came at the end of seven days of deliberations by the jurors, whose number was reduced from 11 to 10 earlier this week.

The inquest, held at the Oval Cricket Ground, south London, has lasted for 12 weeks and is estimated to have cost around £6million in court costs and legal fees. It heard evidence for the first time from the two armed officers who shot Mr de Menezes, 27, a Brazilian electrician.

They fired nine shots, hitting Mr de Menezes in the head seven times, after mistaking him for a suicide bomber on July 22 2005 – the day after four terrorists failed to set off suicide bombs in London then went on the run.

The officers, identified only as Charlie 12 and Charlie 2, said they had shouted “armed police” as the ran onto the Northern Line train at Stockwell, south London, and that Mr de Menezes had stood up and moved towards them aggressively. They claimed his reaction led them to shoot him because they feared he was about to detonate a bomb.

But passengers on the train said they did not hear warning shouts and did not see Mr de Menezes leave his seat. One woman claimed that the policemen appeared to be “out of control”.

During the evidence, the court heard that surveillance officers deployed to search for Hussain Osman, one of the fugitive bombers, did not have a picture of the man they were looking for. Mr de Menezes was thought to be a likeness for Osman but never positively identified as the terrorist before he was shot.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Cressida Dick, who was Gold Command officer in charge of the operation, told the hearing that she did not believe any officer had done anything wrong or unreasonable. She also said she feared that a similar incident could happen again.

Last year, an Old Bailey jury found the Metropolitan Police guilty of breaching health and safety law in the operation which led to Mr de Menezes’s death. The force was fined £175,000.

LIPSTICK ON A PIG (South Africa)

Posted by Gilmour Poincaree on December 5, 2008

28 November 2008

by Lance Greyling, MP ID chief whip

PUBLISHED BY ‘THE FINANCIAL MAIL’ (South Africa)

The letter by the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Donald Lee, “Voting on racial lines” (November 21), attempts to portray the Independent Democrats (ID) as a “coloured party”. This is an old tactic by the DA to dismiss the ID, play the race card and sow division – so much for the rebranding of the DA and a supposed change of style.

Research conducted by Markinor shows the ID has the most diverse support base of any party in SA and that the DA has far more white voters than the ID has coloured voters. The research, conducted earlier this year, shows the ID’s support among coloureds is about 40%, but for the DA nearly 60% of its support comes from whites. Twenty-six percent of the ID’s support is black, while for the DA only 11% of its support is black. About 29% of the ID’s support comes from white South Africans.

What makes the DA’s recent attempt to trick the SA public still more laughable and disgraceful is a brief look at how Helen Zille and the white leaders of the DA have systematically sidelined coloureds and blacks when it comes to appointing anyone into a position of power in the DA.

About 75% of their MPs are white, their leader is white, their parliamentary leader is white, their CEO is white and eight of their nine provincial leaders are white. Perhaps someone needs to remind them that we, white South Africans, only constitute 9% of the population and that we need to deal with the issues of transformation and diversity.

In contrast, the ID’s leadership is far more inclusive and reflective of the demographics of our country. And the many white people in the ID, myself included, understand and are committed to transformation, as opposed to the DA which wants all those who suffered under apartheid to forget or “transcend” the past.

We cannot talk about equal opportunity without taking into account the hundreds of years of oppression and underdevelopment of the majority of our people.

The ID’s vision and message has always been one of bridging the divides in SA and we have specifically chosen not to mobilise people along the lines of racial divisions.

This is in stark contrast to the DA which specifically sought to fuel racial fears in the Cape Town local elections, where one radio station even refused to play its advertisement as it was deemed to be racially offensive.

The DA’s rebranding, to paraphrase US president-elect Barack Obama, amounts to nothing more than lipstick on a pig.

1000 JEWISH EXTREMISTS ATTACK HEBRON PALESTINIANS – Tel Aviv under alert as Israel assassinates Palestinian fighter, blocks humanitarian aid to Gaza

HEBRON, West Bank – At least 13 Palestinians were wounded overnight as more than 1,000 ultra-nationalist Israelis hurled rocks at residents, homes and police jeeps in the Palestinian West Bank city of Hebron which under Israeli occupation.

The rioting broke out as rumours spread that security forces were set to evict 100 Jewish settlers from a house the Israeli high court has ordered evacuated.

Young settlers, backed by right-wing supporters hurled rocks for several hours at Palestinian homes and police vehicles.

At least 13 Palestinians were wounded and significant damage was caused to homes in Hebron, medics and witnesses said.

In the northern West Bank, dozens of settlers clashed with Palestinians and border police, and blocked roads in a show of support for the Israelis living in the Palestinian Hebron house.

The Israeli High Court on November 16 ordered the settlers to leave the Hebron house in which they have lived since March 2007, but security forces have not enforced the order to date.

The settlers insist they have bought the house, but the court said the sale was not completed.

The settlers have been involved in several clashes since the eviction order was issued, and have desecrated a mosque and a Muslim cemetery.

With more than 170,000 Palestinian residents, Hebron is the largest city in the Israeli-occupied West Bank apart from annexed Arab east Jerusalem.

It has long been a flashpoint because of a settler enclave of around 600 hardline Jews in the heart of the city, and a further 6,500 settlers living in Kiryat Arba on the outskirts.

Tel Aviv under alert

Israeli police were on high alert Tuesday in Tel Aviv following fears of a Palestinian attack, a police source said, as citizens were warned to steer clear of the city until further notice.

The police set up barricades at entry points into Tel Aviv, sparking huge traffic jams while radio stations urged Israelis not to visit the city until the alert was lifted.

It was the first time in seven months that an Israeli city was put under such tight security.

Israeli troops kill Palestinian

Israeli soldiers captured and fatally shot a member of a Palestinian resistance group Monday in the northern West Bank, Palestinian security officials said.

The 27-year-old Mohammed Kenan was killed by a special Israeli unit wearing civilian clothing as he boarded a vehicle that carried him to the Palestinian Authority prison where he was locked up every night. An Israeli army spokesman said Kenan was killed as he was trying to flee, despite warning shots.

According to witnesses, Kenan, a local official with the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades – an armed offshoot of the Fatah Party of Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas – had been carrying a pistol.

At least 555 people, most of them Palestinians, have been killed since November 2007.

Israeli warships block Libyan aid boat near Gaza

Israeli warships on Monday prevented a Libyan cargo vessel from reaching the Gaza Strip, the impoverished Palestinian territory under a crippling Israeli blockade.

The ship, laden with 3,000 tonnes of goods, was stopped several kilometres (miles) off Gaza’s shores and ordered to return to the Egyptian port of El-Arish, said Palestinian MP Jamal Khodary, who heads an international campaign against the Israeli sanctions.

“Navy ships approached the Libyan boat and ordered it on the radio to turn back, and so it did,” Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said.

Hamas said turning the Libyan boat back “showed the true, criminal face of the occupation.”

A spokesman for Hamas, Fawzi Barhum, also urged Egypt to reopen the Rafah crossing. “Its closure will enter into history as a crime committed by all those who besiege Gaza,” he said in a statement.

In Tripoli, an official said the ship’s crew was in contact with the Libyan authorities.

“The crew has told us Israeli warships were conducting harassment measures even though it is a civilian vessel loaded with humanitarian aid,” the official said.

The source said that the crew will have no option but to return to Libya as the goods cannot be unloaded in Gaza.

The Libyan attempt to deliver aid to Gaza was the first such effort by an Arab state to defy the blockade, although European and other humanitarian peace activists have made three trips from Cyprus since August without being intercepted by the Israeli navy.

The Qatar Charity Organisation said in Doha on Monday it plans to ship one tonne of medical aid to Gaza this week in a bid to break the blockade.

Its vice president Abdallah al-Nimaa said the ship is set to sail from Doha on Friday, but that he expects the Israeli authorities to stop the vessel.

The Libyan consignment consists of 1,200 tonnes of rice, 750 tonnes of milk, 500 tonnes of oil, 500 tonnes of flour and 100 tonnes of medicine, said the Libyan Fund for Aid and Development in Africa, which chartered the vessel.

Most of the 1.5 million people living in the Gaza Strip depend on foreign aid.

Libya, the only Arab state on the 15-member UN Security Council, has no diplomatic relations with Israel and has frequently criticised it over the situation in Gaza.

Israel, which wants to crush any Palestinian liberation movement, responded to Hamas’s win in the elections with sanctions, and almost completely blockaded the impoverished coastal strip after Hamas seized power in 2007, although a ‘lighter’ siege had already existed before.

Human rights groups, both international and Israeli, slammed Israel’s siege of Gaza, branding it “collective punishment.”

A group of international lawyers and human rights activists had also accused Israel of committing “genocide” through its crippling blockade of the Strip.

Gaza is still considered under Israeli occupation as Israel controls air, sea and land access to the Strip.

The Rafah crossing with Egypt, Gaza’s sole border crossing that bypasses Israel, rarely opens as Egypt is under immense US and Israeli pressure to keep the crossing shut.

SYSTEMATIC RACISM – Over the past few weeks, Lithuania has shown itself to be wildly intolerant and xenophobic

Posted by Gilmour Poincaree on November 24, 2008

Nov 12, 2008

The first instance came in the form of a survey by Vilnius University, which found that 80 percent of people couldn’t work or communicate with ‘different’ (on the basis of race, sexual preference, language, or religion) people.

The main case, however, can be seen in the fact that Prosecutor General’s Office has failed to punish a public display of blatant racism (see story Page 1).

The president of the basketball federation singled out two black players and called them “black assholes.” This is a disgrace to the nation, which hold basketball as sacred as religion and has many foreign players in the national league.

First of all, the president got off scot-free and did nothing except offer a flat – and clearly insincere – apology to the players he berated. He should have resigned on the spot and disappeared from public life for the rest of his days.

Secondly, the Prosecutor General’s Office let him off with nothing more than a casual admonishment, saying that he was a naughty boy and not to do it again. By letting him off on a technicality, they are supporting, instead of condemning, racism in the country.

By in large, racism in Lithuania goes unnoticed by the outside world. There aren’t many people who speak Lithuanian in the world and even fewer who live in other countries and would cry foul when this sort of behavior arises.

In fact, it was a matter of weeks before the players themselves found out that they had been slandered. No one bothered to tell them. In the mean time, a media frenzy had ensued and their club had sent a letter to the PGO asking the media and government not to rock the boat.

The players were rightly furious for having not been told. One player said he only found out about the comments after the case had been dropped. He also learned that the players wouldn’t have their secret case heard in court.

It is time for racism to stop hiding behind the Lithuanian language – the country is becoming more and more international every day. The national media even tried to hide Lithuania’s embarrassment by mistranslating Basketball Federation President Garastas’ comments to make them seem less offensive.

While clearly shamed and wanting to save face, Lithuania has got to step up and say no to racist tomfoolery at the highest level before it can be rooted out at the grassroots level as well. The country might be able to avoid an international reproach in the short term by hiding racism in the obscurity of its language, but until it comes to terms with the problem and punishes the crime, Lithuania will not shed its reputation as the most racist nation in Europe.

SAMBISTA DUDU NOBRE ACUSA COMISSÁRIO DE VÔO DE RACISMO – Confusão aconteceu em vôo da American Airlines vindo de NY – O acusado Carlos Carrico nega; mas testemunha confirma (Brasil)

Posted by Gilmour Poincaree on November 24, 2008

23/11/2008 – 21:30

“O Dudu me deu uma puxada, porque a caneta ia pegar no meu pescoço”, conta o produtor.

“Chegou e me deu dois chutes. Ele estava desse lado e me chutou duas vezes”, mostra Carlos Carrico.

NUEVAS DENUNCIAS EN BOLIVIA CONTRA AGENCIA ESTADOUNIDENSE

Posted by Gilmour Poincaree on November 15, 2008

15/11/2008

Mario Hubert Garrido

HELPING HUSSEIN – A Muslim campaigner reflects on the need to defend Barack Obama’s Christianity to American voters

Posted by Gilmour Poincaree on November 15, 2008

October 2008

by Neal Hussein (*)

My name is Neal Hussein, and I have worked for Senator Barack Obama’s campaign for US President. I BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA - IN CAMPAIGN - 2008have had the unique — and at times unsettling — opportunity of being a Muslim named Hussein trying to convince American voters that Barack Hussein Obama is a Christian with no Muslim sympathies.

Obama’s father was born Muslim but later renounced Islam. As the senator chronicled in his first memoir, Obama’s parents separated when he was two, and he was raised by his agnostic mother and his grandparents. Obama’s father was mostly absent from his life; nevertheless, Obama’s association with Islam has persisted because of his middle name, internet-based rumors and the several years he spent living in Indonesia as a child.

Twenty-four hour news stations exploded with the ‘breaking news’ last fall: “As a child, Barack Obama attended a madrasa!” After several days of talking heads discussing the story at length, a reporter finally sent back footage of the school in session. The students wore western uniforms in integrated classes. American late-night comedy shows had fun, showing the hysteria of the cable news channels, followed by The Daily Show host Jon Stewart whispering conspiratorially to viewers, “psst, somebody tell them madrasa means ‘school.’”

While the furor died down, the stigma remained in the electorate’s minds

One day, while canvassing door to door in New Hampshire, my partner and I were invited in by a likely Democratic voter. Upon learning our names, she was quite excited by the novelty of having a pair named Neal Hussein and Benjamin Jacobs come to her door. That was probably the one moment when the diversity I added to the campaign was an asset in talking to voters.

Every other time I introduced myself as simply Neal, and never mentioned my ethnic origins or religious affiliations. Doing so might negate all the benefits that my knowledge of foreign affairs brought to the campaign.

In the New York campaign office, a co-worker named Hani Khalil was talking with a potential voter who had called to check if Obama really was a Muslim. After several minutes of refuting it, Hani got off the phone and said to me, “what I really wanted to tell him was ‘I am a Muslim from Chicago and would probably know if he was one too.’”

Political campaign work requires us to grin and bear it, no matter what comes your way. For example, on Super Tuesday I did visibility work in downtown Manhattan when a woman approached me and asked, “what does Obama think about white people?”

I politely pointed out that Obama’s mother was white.

“His mother’s dead!” she snapped.

Still grinning, I pointed out that Obama had many white friends and worked closely with the other 99 members of the Senate, where he was the only black man.

Obama was asked about the rumors directly, and with a seemingly patient smile he responded with the facts: He is a Christian and was sworn into the Senate with his hand on the Bible, not the Qur’an.

As a Muslim listening to the debate, it was hard to not hear Obama ask, ‘Why would it matter if I was?’ I had to remind myself that he wore the same patient face when accused of being too black, then not black enough, or too diplomatic, or any of the other distractions he has had to push past to remain on message. While some are upset that by his campaign’s distance or seemingly mild reaction to these ‘smears,’ Obama still enjoys a large amount of support from Arab and Muslim communities. These groups have even been surprisingly patient with his ‘disappointing conventional’ statements on Israeli-Palestinian matters.

“Arab and Muslim Americans are almost whole hog (even though it’s haram) behind this campaign,” Khalil explains. “And many, including myself, still see this as a useful starting-off point for more organized efforts at civic engagement in our communities.”

Perhaps voters’ fears that Obama is Muslim stems not from actual suspicions, but instead is a convenient pretext for not voting for a black candidate, without having to admit to racism. While mistrusting someone for being black is unacceptable in most parts of the country, voting for religious reasons remains widely tolerated.

This problem cannot be seen in a vacuum. Many less educated, rural voters hear much of what they understand about politics through religious figures, and the idea of America as a Christian nation has been reinforced over decades and generations. The current administration has exacerbated the problem through continuous references to ‘Islamo fascism’ and ‘Islamic extremism.’ As Muslim Americans become a larger, more integrated part of American society (by recent estimates there are currently two to six million Muslim Americans) this mentality is likely to slowly morph or evaporate, but probably not by November 4.

Ironically, one of the campaign’s bigger public relations problems was not big enough to save us from the religion issue. Midway through the Democratic primary race, the fiery rhetoric of Jeremiah Wright, long-time minister at Obama’s church, became the rage on all the 24-hour cable news channels. Suddenly the candidate who was struggling to prove he was not too soft was having to prove he was not too extreme.

A co-worker who worked Muslim outreach in several states during the primary lamented the fact that Obama’s participation in Wright’s church for 20 years might become a big enough issue to cost him the primary election, but would never be large enough to wipe away rumors of him being a Muslim. A Pew Research Center study shows 13 percent of registered voters currently believe he is a Muslim, up from 10 percent in March.

That Obama’s religion is still a central issue in the campaign seems to indicate that the senator has done well selling his economic plans and dealt with many of the questions surrounding his foreign policy experience — issues of actual substance. Perhaps voters have not been fooled by the persistent rumors. Because of this and because we believe our own message of hope, we will keep smiling until November 4. Until then though, I don’t think we will exhale. et
